Carabalí Rainforest Park occupies 600 acres of El Yunque's northwestern foothills, where the karst limestone bedrock meets alluvial river plains carved by the Río Mameyes watershed. The land served as a working cattle ranch through the early 20th century before transitioning to adventure tourism in 1998, when the Carabalí family opened the first motorized trail network approved by Puerto Rico's Department of Natural and Environmental Resources. The park sits 32 kilometers east of San Juan along Route 3, bordered by the Luquillo Mountains to the south and the Atlantic coastal plain to the north. The terrain rises from 40 meters above sea level at the entrance to 180 meters along the upper ridge trails. Seasonal rainfall averages 240 centimeters annually, feeding a network of seasonal streams that cross the main loop trails between May and November. The park's trail system spans 12 kilometers, divided into three difficulty tiers marked by colored stakes: green routes follow graded fire roads through secondary forest, blue routes add rocky descents and water crossings, and black routes include 20-degree inclines through ungrooved mud channels. The predominant vegetation shifts from sierra palm and yagrumo lowland forest in the valley to tabonuco-dominant canopy at elevation, with strangler figs anchoring the trail edges where limestone outcrops surface. ATV jungle tour Puerto Rico operations at Carabalí run seven days a week, with departures scheduled between 08:00 and 15:00 to avoid afternoon thunderstorms common from June through October. The park maintains a fleet of single-rider ATVs and two-seat UTVs manufactured by Polaris and Can-Am, inspected monthly under Puerto Rico Act 106 trail-vehicle regulations. Guides lead groups of six to twelve riders in closed-loop formations, stopping at four designated overlooks: the Palma Real platform above the lower pasture, the Quebrada Seca river ford, the Mirador Ridge facing El Yunque's eastern peaks, and the Bamboo Grove tunnel planted during the ranch era. The majority of riders complete the standard 90-minute circuit without prior off-road experience. Helmets, closed-toe footwear, and signed liability waivers are mandatory. The park prohibits riders under 16 from operating vehicles independently, though passengers as young as six may ride in UTVs with an adult driver. Carabalí shares the Luquillo corridor with Campo Rico Ranch, a competitor located four kilometers west in Carolina. Both properties offer similar trail durations and terrain profiles, though Carabalí's proximity to El Yunque National Forest and its higher elevation gain distinguish the two. The park also operates horseback riding, ziplining, and guided hiking excursions, making it a consolidated hub for terrestrial adventure activities on Puerto Rico's northeast coast.
